Last Spring/Summer, I discovered a new author - at least she was new to me - Dorothea Benton Frank.
She is originally from Sullivans Island, SC, which is right outside of Charleston. Most of her books are set in the Lowcountry and she has a deliciously southern bent.
Last week, I read the book Bulls Island that she wrote in 2009. If you are not familiar with the Lowcountry, Bulls Island is a protected area rich in native species of birds, insects, reptiles and more. My stepfather and stepbrothers love going exploring on that island.
The book features a lady from that area, now relocated to New York who is going to be sent there on business. The catch is that she has some unfinished business there with family and a former fiancee. There is a LOT of drama with the families and her past. As always, lies eventually reveal themselves and she has to make some tough decisions.
Frank writes with detail and makes you want to really meet her characters. She knows the area well and it comes to life with her pen. This is definitely a great "beach" read for summer.
I don't want to tell much more about the book because I think you should grab a copy for yourself!
