When considering what to write about for Saturday, the day Christ was in the grave, I decided against posting any songs. I tried to imagine how his followers felt. Were they dejected? Afraid? Did they doubt all that Jesus had taught them and told them? Did they quickly forget how he had told them this would happen? Did they forget his promise that he would rise again? Were they replaying all the moments they had shared with him and trying to piece together what had actually transpired over the past few days?
They had the promise in front of them, but they were not clinging to it.
As I think of these things and try to put myself in their shoes, I realize I AM JUST LIKE THEM.
I have ALL of God's promises before me. Every word he wanted me to hear is all written down in HIS book. I can cling to His word, His promises, His plan or I can become distracted by all the turn of events going on around me and quickly forget what He said He was going to do.
I have wondered about Satan.
What was he thinking on Saturday? Did he actually think he had won? Did he really believe even for a few hours that he had defeated the God of the Universe? Even he in his evil spirit KNEW that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God. He had to know it was not over yet!
What was Peter thinking? Was he beating himself up for denying Christ? Was he wishing he could go back and redo the past 24 hours? Did he feel defeated?
How did Mary, the mother of Jesus, deal with her grief? She knew He was God's son first and hers for but a little while. But that certainly would not lessen her grief. Was she remembering him as a baby, in that stable in Bethlehem? Was she seeing him working with Joseph building a table or chair? Did she remember his first steps, first words, or his smile? Perhaps those things she "treasured in her heart" from the beginning brought her comfort in this hour.
So many others: Mary, Martha, Lazarus, Mary Magdalene, Jesus' siblings, the other disciples, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimethea - what was on their minds and hearts?
THANKFULLY - we KNOW what was on the other side of Saturday.
Sunday was coming!!
I don't know about you - but I am ready for tomorrow! For a few more hours, we will be silent....but Sunday is coming!
