Arise My Love

Growing up in youth group at my church, we went every summer for camp at Cedarmore. The camp was staffed by college age students on "Son Teams". Each team had a central task/purpose. Son Celebration was the music/singing team, Son Burst did creative ministries, Son Share was drama, Son Praise was a "revival" type team and Son Bound was sports related. We all thought the Son team members were amazing! They led our bible study groups, recreation and facilitated all the worship services throughout the week.

One year in particular there was a group of four guys from Son Celebration who sang the song, "Arise, My Love" by Newsong. I saw them perform it several times throughout the summer and again in the fall. Every single time they sang it, I had goosebumps. The words were powerful, the harmonies perfectly tight and the buildup of the song was amazing!

You can see a video and hear Newsong perform this song here.

Here are the lyrics:

Arise, My Love

Not a word was heard
at the tomb that day.
Just shuffling of soldiers feet
as they guarded the grave.
One day, two days,
three days had past.
Could it be that Jesus
breathed His last?

Could it be that His Father
had forsaken him?
Turned his back on his son
dispising our sin.
All hell seemed to whisper
'Just forget Him, He's dead.'
Then the Father looked down
to his son and he said..

Arise, My love.
Arise, My love.
The grave no longer
has a hold on you
No more death's sting
No more suffering
Arise...Arise...my love.

The Earth trembled
and the tomb began to shake,
and like lightening
from Heaven the stone was rolled away.
And as dead man
the guards they all stood there in fright
As the power of love
displayed its might
Then suddenly a melody
filled the air
Riding wings of wind,
it was everywhere
The words all creation
had been longing to hear
The sweet sound of victory,
so loud and clear.

Arise, my love.
Arise, my love.
The grave no longer has a hold on you.
No more death's sting
no more suffering
Arise...arise....

Sin, where are your shackles?
Death, where is your sting?
Hell; has been defeated.
The grave could not hold the king.

Arise, My love.
Arise, My love.
The grave no longer
has a hold on you
No more death's sting
No more suffering
Arise....Arise....Arise

How fortunate we are that the "grave could not hold the king"!

Enjoy!

  1. I tried out for Son Celebration and Son Praise when I was in College. Made it to "call back" weekend, but didn't make it, but got sent to Arkansas that summer to serve at a children's home instead. Although I was disappointed that I didn't make it on the singing team, my summer in AR was life changing! :-)

  2. Tracey -
I tried out for Celebration during my Sophomore year at Georgetown. I made it to "call back" weekend too. Then I completely lost my voice the night before. I went anyway, but it was painful - I really couldn't sing. I ended up spending that summer working as a youth minister at my home church when their regular youth minister quit. I had a great summer and I know that was God's plan for me all along! Funny how things work out that way, right? I wonder if we were at tryouts at the same time?
Jenny ended up doing Son Burst two summers in a row. She would've been there in 1997 and 1998.
