The upside to having so much sickness in my home last week (and now this week - Blake is sick now) is that I have had a lot of down time at home to sit and read. Last week I read Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. This is another book on my list for 2011. I enjoy Nicholas Sparks' books. His characters always seem realistic, like someone you or I might already know. His books seem to follow a pretty straightforward pattern. They are usually about a special relationship that involves someone getting ill, someone being rescued from a bad situation or simply a sweet love story. They are always set somewhere in North Carolina, particularly along the coast.
This book was about a young woman who has started over in a small, coastal town. She is a waitress and befriends a family who own a small grocery store. She becomes close to the father, a widow. As the book progresses, you learn more and more about "Katie's" past and what led her to end up there. She came from a very abusive marriage where her life was in danger. I do not want to give away the ending of the book, but there are some major "rescue" elements in this story.
It is a sweet story about the power of love, in its purest form and how that love can help transform a person.
It was a quick read and entertaining. It would be great for Spring Break or this summer by the pool or on the beach! (Can you tell it is snowing and I am dreaming of something warm?)
Let me know if you read it and what you think!
