A Bouquet of Friendship

Last Friday was my birthday.

Although I'm not as enthusiastic about my birthday as I once was, I found myself feeling extremely grateful for the rich blessings I have received through friendships in my life.

Facebook is a great place to belong on your birthday!  Post after post scrolls down with birthday greetings from former teachers, family, friends, kids I had in youth group, sorority sisters from college and more.

Saturday I went to a baby shower for a friend I've known since Mother Goose time at the public library when we were three. We have grown up together, went to Prom, Graduation, dealt with "stupid" boys, went through college and saw each other through weddings and childbirth. There is a treasure in friendships that literally span decades. At the shower and on the drive home, I found myself thinking about the many friends in my life- some from grade school, college, church and work.

I am overwhelmed by the richness of friendships I have developed in my adult life. I've discovered motherhood, studied God's word in bible study, lifted up their marriage and family in prayer and literally run races with these women. We are wading through all the flurry of activity that accompanies having children in sports and other activities, some balancing jobs with demands at home. Through it all, I have laughed, cried, said "I'm sorry" and escaped the daily grind with a rare but welcomed girls night out.

All of these relationships have made me a better person. I am forever grateful to God for each of these dear people I've had an opportunity to know. Some have been in my life for a brief season and some for (gulp) almost 35 years!!!!!
